Edna Mode

...and guest.

Welcome

Hello dahling! My gosh you've gotten fat, come in, come in!

This is a one-page fansite for the fashion designer from Pixar's movie, The Incredibles. Edna Mode is amazing and captures the audience with her outrageous, yet incredible fashion designs for superheros. In her words, "I used to design for gods!". She is also well known for a very famous meme that you will learn of later.

This site was created for the Amassment's One Page, One Month Encore Challenge.

This site has not been edited for smaller screens and mobile support as of this time, apologies.

About The Incredibles

The Incredibles is the sixth film created by Pixar released in 2014. It's about a family of superheros who are forced to hide their powers, along with the other superheroes, and live a quiet suburban life. Mr. Icredible wants to help people despite that and this leads his entire family into a battle with a villain and his killer robot that learns while fighting.

Brad Bird, the director, developed the film inspired by the 1960s comics and spy films from his youth and pitched the film after his first feature, The Iron Giant, which was a box office disappoint. He carried over the staff from that film to work on The Incredibles and the animation team was tasked animating an all-human cast, which required new technology to be created so that they could animate detailed anatomy, clothing, and realistic skin and hair.

The film received the 2004 Annie Award for Best Animated Feature and two Academy Awards. It was also the first animated film to win the prestigious Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. It was announced in May 2015 that a sequel is officially in development.

Edna Mode

Edna Mode is a minor character yet holds a very strong part in Pixar's animated feature. Mr. Incredible goes to her mansion when his supersuit gets a rip on a job and requests for her to fix it. After she calls it a hobo suit and throws it away telling him, "I never look back, darling. It distracts from the now." She pretends that she won't make a new one for him after saying that he'll have to find a new suit. After a playful, "You push too hard darling, but I accept!", she starts to get to work on drawing the new supersuit.

When Mr. Incredible makes a suggestion to make one with a cape, she throws a balled up paper saying "No capes". After he comments that it's his decision Edna, lists Thunderhead, Stratogale, Metaman, Dynaguy, and Splashdown all having their capes being caught and meeting their demise and shouts the infamous "NO CAPES!"

She's also known to be eccentric yet also friendly at the same time. She hardly listens to others, especially when they're trying to talk to her when she's busy showcasing her work. Example being when Helen, Elasticgirl, tried to talk to her on the phone and when she came to visit.

She wants the supers to be heros again since she is tired of designing for just fashion. She loves the thrill, the excitement, and the challenge it brings. She has shown too that she can make the supersuits very durable, even with heat of 1,000 degrees, by customizing the suits for each family of the Incredibles. When pointed out that Jack Jack, the youngest and a baby, has no powers, she just says that he will be fabulous anyway.

Quotes

Edna: [to Mr. Incredible] My god, you've gotten fat.

Bob: Weren't you in the news? Some show in, Prayge... Prague?
Edna: Milan, darling. Milan. Supermodels. Heh! Nothing super about them... spoiled, stupid little stick figures with poofy lips who think only about themselves. Feh! I used to design for gods!

Edna: This is a hobo suit, darling. You can't be seen in this. I won't allow it. Fifteen years ago, maybe, but now? Feh!
Bob: Wait, what do you mean? You designed it.
Edna: I never look back, darling! It distracts from the now.

Edna: You need a new suit, that much is certain.
Bob: A new suit? Well, where the heck am I gonna get a new suit?
Edna: You can't! It's impossible! I'm far too busy, so ask me now before I can become sane.
Bob: Wait? You want to make me a suit?
Edna: You push too hard, darling! But I accept!

Edna: It will be bold! Dramatic!
Bob: Yeah!
Edna: Heroic!
Bob: Yeah. Something classic, like, like Dynaguy. Oh, he had a great look! Oh, the cape and the boots...
Edna: [throws a wadded ball of paper at Bob's head] No capes!
Bob: Isn't that my decision?
Edna: Do you remember Thunderhead? Tall, storm powers? Nice man, good with kids.
Bob: Listen, E...
Edna: November 15th of '58! All was well, another day saved, when... his cape snagged on a missile fin!
Bob: Thunderhead was not the brightest bulb...
Edna: Stratogale! April 23rd, '57! Cape caught in a jet turbine!
Bob: E, you can't generalize about these things...
Edna: Metaman, express elevator! Dynaguy, snagged on takeoff! Splashdown, sucked into a vortex!
Edna: No capes!

Bob: You know I'm retired from hero work.
Edna: As am I, Robert, yet here we are.

Bob: E, I just need a patch job. For... sentimental reasons.
Edna: Fine. I will also fix the hobo suit.
Bob: You're the best of the best, E.
Edna: [Walking up stairs] Yes, I know, dahling.

Voice

The voice of Edna Mode is actually not by a female, but Brad Bird, the director of The Incredibles himself.

The creators originally couldn't find an appropirate actress for the role. When they asked Lily Tomlin to voice her, Brad Bird provided an example to show the actress of what Edna Mode should sound like. Tomlin herself told Bird that he successfully captured the voice and that he should provide it in the film himself.

He also did her voice for the video game that released in 2004 on the Playstation 2 that is an adaption from the film following the same plotline.

Why Edna Mode?

The first time I saw the movie, and she made her appearance when Mr. Incredible visits her, I cracked up. Still do to this day when she notes on how he has gotten fat while she looks into the camera with her nose taking up most of the camera. While you may think she's a snooty designer, she's really one to have fun.

The voice that Brad Bird gave her too just made it even more enjoyable. I've never heard such a thing and it really stood out - perhaps stole the limelight - since it's so unique and it just fits her to a T. It's no wonder he was told to do it himself after providing an example.

I can sort of relate to her in a way when I want to show off my designs and wanting a challenge. She's so eager to create costumes for the superhero community and practically fangirls over her own designs. She's also very supportive and quite a pushover, telling Helen (Elasticgirl) to get a grip and go find her husband and fight and win! I really have no favorite line of hers since she's so wise and hilarious.

About the Site

This fansite was created very late for Amassment's event, One Page One Month Encore. I seriously waited until the last moment to do it and in the end, it came out exactly as I wanted it.

I used Bootstrap 3 while using a template from StartBootstrap.com since I needed a scroll and a fashion-like site to fit Edna's role and personality.

I chose black and white as the main color scheme and the magenta like color is accents from her clothing that Edna wears that is used for the emphasis/italics. While simple, it's striking, just like how she is.

Credit goes to Pixar for the image used above with a small addition of a shadow by me so that she isn't just floating up there.
